Sage's Group Head Cleaner is a back-flushing product dedicated to cleaning the brew group – the part of the machine in direct contact with the coffee during extraction. Packaged in 5g single-dose powder sachets, it dissolves coffee oils and organic residues accumulated in the portafilter, basket, and internal channels of the group, without leaving any odor or parasitic taste.

Each extraction leaves invisible but very real traces: oxidized coffee oils, microscopic grounds particles, a brownish deposit on the group's walls. Over time, these residues alter the aromatic profile of extractions, introducing a greasy bitterness and parasitic acidity that add to the coffee's natural profile. The Group Head Cleaner eliminates these accumulations in a single application, thus preserving the aromatic transparency that your specialty coffees deserve.

The new powder formulation makes it easy to use without direct contact with the product. The packaging has been redesigned to reduce plastic and use recyclable envelopes. The box contains 6 sachets.

What you don't see starts with what you clean

Coffee oils are essential aromatic compounds during extraction, contributing to the body, sweetness, and complexity of espresso. However, once extracted and deposited on the group head walls, they oxidize quickly and become a source of residual bitterness. This is the most common mechanism of aromatic drift in home espresso machines: not a degradation of the beans, but a progressive contamination from previous cycles.
The Group Head Cleaner interrupts this cycle by dissolving deposits at their source. Used regularly, it helps maintain the aromatic neutrality of the brew group, an essential condition for the profile of an Ethiopian natural or an Indian washed to express itself without interference from a previous extraction.

FAQs

For daily use, weekly cleaning of the grouphead is recommended. For more occasional use (two to three times a week), monthly cleaning is sufficient. Some Sage machines automatically initiate a guided backflush cycle: simply insert the sachet into the cleaning basket provided and follow the on-screen instructions.

No, its formula was specifically designed for espresso machines and is compatible with the materials used by Sage (stainless steel, silicone seals, aluminium). It cleans without abrasion or chemical residue. The automatic rinse at the end of the cycle removes all traces of the product before the next extraction.

These are two complementary products that do not act on the same targets. The Group Head Cleaner removes organic residues (oils and coffee grounds) from the brew group, on the coffee side. The Machine Descaler treats mineral deposits (limescale) in the internal hydraulic circuits, on the water side. Both are necessary for complete maintenance of your machine.
